7 Albums To Mend A Broken Heart

The Top 7 Albums...To Mend Your Heart

Red Heart Mended With Bandaid

Let's celebrate some more love for the month of February by posting the best heart mending albums. The following albums are full of themes regarding lost love, awful ex's, and the feelings of introspection that follow a break up. These albums are in a way a remedy to the heartache that follows a shattered relationship.

Artist: The Story So Far
Album: Under Soil And Dirt

The Story So Far's debut album titled Under Soil And Dirty often abbreviated as USAD (you have to wonder if that was intentional or not) is filled to the brim with angst fueled break up lyrics. While some people might say the lyrics are a little misogynistic, the themes are still easily relate-able for anyone experiencing post break-up heartache. Stand outs include "Roam," "Quicksand," "Swords and Pens," and "High Regard." It is lines like "I must wake up move on and mend instead of wasting so much time here" (Swords and Pens) and "If I hold on much longer I might break my hands" (Quicksand) that show some deep introspection while simultaneously encouraging listeners to have the strength to move on.
Artist: The American Scene
Album: Safe For Now

The American Scene on the album Safe For Now have a knack for putting words to feelings most people struggle to express. This, along with their vulnerable and intimate lyrics are what make Safe For Now so special. Take the song "When You're Undone" for example as vocalist Jeff Wright croons "I've been fucked for 14 days now while you still swear that you're fine, but that empty bottle I saw in your bedroom suggested otherwise." Or the lines "Tell me what you really want, is it me right now or the easy way out." For further evidence of The American Scene's writing ability see the tracks "Shape-Shifter" and "Safe For Now". Safe For Now is a a guaranteed remedy for heart breaks of all shapes and sizes.

Artist: Forever Came Calling
Album: Contender

Forever Came Calling's album Contender is the epitome of a summer album. One that's full of excellent hooks and melodies that will warm your insides and invite you to sing alone. Forever Came Calling are more than capable of writing lyrics about overcoming heartbreak, with lines like "I came in here alone and that's exactly how I'm leaving. I never came for you, just to prove I'm not defeated," on the track "For The Wolves." Contender is an album about strength after heartbreak made apparent as vocalist Joe Candelaria yells out "If I'm not worth your while what's your while worth anyway?" on the track "Ides." Contender is sure to restore your heart and your confidence back to normal.

Artist: Tegan and Sarah
Album: Heartthrob

Tegan and Sarah's album Heartthrob is a dark and lyrically heavy album with themes regarding loss, disappointment, heartbreak, and regret. Yet, the music itself is equivalent to a sugar rush from a candy high, that dresses up the darker lyrical content. This combination creates an album that provides the mood enhancing high of pop music, while simultaneously addressing darker themes of  broken relationships. The effect is heart wrenching music you want to dance to.

Artist: American Football
Album: American Football

American Football's debut album (and only album) is absolutely heart breaking to listen to. The atmosphere is heavy and thick with somber trumpets and intricate guitar work that can bring a tear to your eye before vocalist Mike Kinsella even utters a word. However sad the music manages to be, the overall effect is one of personal harmony as you realize you're not alone feeling what you're feeling. The album is considered by some to be the pinnacle of 90s "emo" and with good reason listen to "Never Meant" for proof.

Artist: Dashboard Confessional
Album: The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most

Would any list involving heartbreak be complete without Dashboard Confessional? The answer is no. Adele can step down from her throne because Chris Carrabba knows heartbreak like no one else, he made a living writing music about it. This album is where that career started and it is an excellent companion piece for a broken heart.

Artist: Acceptance
Album: Phantoms

By now you're getting the picture that all these albums are excellent at conveying lyrics about overcoming the heartbreak and pain the ending of a relationship can bring. Acceptance's Phantoms is another excellent album to mend your heart. Songs like "Over You" and "So Contagious" are contagiously catchy (pun intended)."Over You" is straightforward, yet damnably catchy as vocalist Jason Vena sings "See it on my face I'm getting over you." "So Contagious" hits the mark in the bridge as Vena belts the lines "You're everything I wanted and come to think of it I'm aching." Phantoms is chock full of accessible alt-rock tracks that are perfect listening for a broken heart.
