5 Songs To Help You Stay #BostonStrong

These 5 songs all capture different elements of what make Boston great city.

Artist: Transit
Song: Young New England
Album: Young New England

"Young New England" is a song about the friendship and camaraderie one can find in Boston. This is made evident in lines such as "If you're too drunk to walk along the streets alone, you know Boston never drinks alone." The song is an anthem for friendships, the nights we've shared together, and that you're never alone in Boston.

Artist: The Standells
Song: Dirty Water
Album: Dirty Water

"Dirty Water" is the unofficially official song of Boston, and the official victory anthem of the Boston Red Sox since 1997. "Dirty Water" makes you proud to be a Bostonian along with all the other lovers, buggers, and thieves... no really they're cool people ask The Standells.

Artist: Dropkick Murphys
Song: Hang Em High
Album: Going Out In Style

No list about Boston music would be complete without the Dropkick Murphys, since the band originated outside the great city. While this song isn't a reference to Boston in particular, lyrically it is representative of the mindset of Boston in this current state. Lyrics like "No mercy, no quarter, they'll pay for their sins. Now lower the cannons the battle begins, we waited together for the cowards to come." The song paints the picture for many Bostonians as we wait for the Marathon Bombing suspects to be subdued.

Artist: Augustana
Song: Boston
Album: All The Stars And Boulevards

Augustana's "Boston" tells the story of a person looking to start a new life, and looking to the city of Boston for the kind of magic they need to start anew. Just by looking at the comments on its YouTube page you can see how much the song means to the people of Boston, especially in a time like now. Boston is a great place to simultaneously lose yourself and find yourself, and Augustana's "Boston" is proof of that.

Artist: Brand New
Song: Logan To Government Center
Album: Your Favorite Weapon

Brand New's "Logan To Government Center" is not only a reference to Boston's public transportation system, but a metaphor for the introspection one tends to do on the MBTA (or any type of inner city public transportation). That's what makes the song special; we've all been there, traveling somewhere alone, people watching, as we think and evaluate our own lives. "Logan To Government Center" is about this type of thinking that we do in this space. In Brand New's case it is about reflecting on a girl who made "New England so great" as they head to the airport to leave.
