Allison Weiss - Say What You Mean Review

Artist: Allison Weiss
Album: Say What You Mean
Record Label:No Sleep Records
Release Date: April 16th, 2013

When listening to a new album for the first time, it is a rare thing to find yourself wanting to sing along. It takes time to build up to that point as you learn the lyrics and melodies behind each track. Allison Weiss's third album Say What You Mean is that rare treat

Say What You Mean is Allison Weiss doing just that, saying everything she needs to say over some deceptively upbeat melodies and instrumentation. The lyrical themes range from heartbreak and longing, to acceptance, and finding strength in doing what you love. Weiss lets all of her feelings out and the results are lyrics that are deep and personal, yet universally relatable. I could give you an example of her excellent lyricism, but why spoil it? Discover it for yourself.

Every track on Weiss's third record is a standout and single worthy. It will be a difficult task to choose your favorite song even after a dozen or so listens, and odds are you'll have more than one. The choruses are more infectious than the Ebola virus, yet it is the pacing and variety of the album that keep it so engaging.

You never know what is going to happen next on Say What You Mean. "Make It Up" is a rock song flirting with pop-synth melodies that refuse to leave your head. "Nothing Left" starts off acoustically before layered instruments build up into a killer chorus. "I Was An Island" has made its complete metamorphosis from an acoustic intro track to a full-fledged rock anthem complete with a guitar solo. "I'll Be Okay" closes the album with Weiss singing some of her most intimate feelings over her acoustic guitar.

Say What You Mean is over before you know it. Listeners will have taken the journey from the sugary synth sweetened opener "Make It Up" to the heart melting closer "I'll Be Okay", and all you'll want to do is press the replay button to hear one of the best albums of 2013 again.
